How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

There's no form to submit and no way to pay for a spot. But there are clear things that make ChatGPT more likely to mention you.

From Tanner, founder of Search Party Co.

If you've ever asked ChatGPT for a recommendation in your industry and seen a competitor's name instead of yours, you're not alone. Between launching my own businesses and working in AI sales, I've seen both sides of this: what it takes to get a business noticed, and how these AI tools decide who to name. Here's what actually helps.

How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?

When ChatGPT searches the web to answer a question, it reads the pages it finds and summarizes what they say. For local or “best of” questions, that usually means business websites, listings, review sites, local news and “best of” lists. When it doesn't search, it relies on what it learned during training.

Either way, it leans on information that's consistent, specific and backed up by more than one source. Nobody outside OpenAI knows the exact recipe, so be wary of anyone who promises you a guaranteed spot.

What should I fix first?

Do reviews affect AI recommendations?

Very likely. Review sites are among the sources AI tools cite most often for “best” questions, and reviews add the kind of specific detail answers are built from, like “fixed our furnace the same day.” Ask happy customers for reviews regularly, and reply to them.

How do I get mentioned on other websites?

AI tools trust what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. Aim for local “best of” lists, your chamber of commerce, supplier or partner pages, local news and community sites. One genuine mention from a respected local site can be worth more than a dozen directory listings.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

It varies. Fixing listings can show results within weeks. Earning mentions and building content takes months. Ask the same questions every month so you can see progress, or run a free AI Visibility Audit to track it for you.
