How to check if AI recommends your business (and why a quick search isn't enough)
Typing your business name into ChatGPT feels like an answer. It usually isn't. Here's what a real AI visibility check looks at, and what a quick search misses.
With every business I've started, my first instinct was to search for it myself and see what came up. It's a natural thing to do, but with AI search, one quick look can tell you completely the wrong story.
Can I just ask ChatGPT if it recommends my business?
You can, and it's a fine gut check. But one search in one tool gives you one answer, from one moment, shaped by your own location and history. AI answers change from run to run and differ from tool to tool, so a single “yes” or “no” can mislead you in either direction.
What does a quick search miss?
- The searches that matter. Customers rarely type your name. They ask “who's the best plumber near me?” or “who can come today?”, and each kind of question can surface different businesses.
- The other engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews draw on different sources and often recommend different businesses.
- Your real competition. Who AI recommends instead of you tells you who you're actually up against.
- The sources. The directories, review sites and local lists AI cites show you where you need to appear. Most people never look at them.
- Mentions vs. recommendations. An answer like “I couldn't find that business” still contains your name. Counting that as a win is one of the most common mistakes.
What does a proper AI visibility audit include?
A proper audit runs several customer-style searches across each major AI engine, checks whether you're genuinely recommended in each answer, records which competitors appear and which sources are cited, and turns it all into a score and a short list of priority fixes. Repeated over time, it shows whether you're gaining ground.
How often should I check my AI visibility?
Monthly is a good rhythm. AI answers shift as new reviews, listings and content appear, so a single snapshot goes stale quickly. Tracking the same searches every month is how you see real progress.
What should I do if AI doesn't recommend me?
Start with the foundations AI leans on most: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings everywhere, clear service pages with FAQ sections, steady reviews, and mentions on the sites AI already cites in your area. Our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT covers each one.
